INTERVIEWS LET TEAMS GET TO KNOW TOP PROSPECTS

Adam Kinelman writes on NHL.com, "The Blues met with 15 prospects Wednesday, and allowed NHL.com the unique opportunity to sit in on two of them – Shattuck-St. Mary's forward Derek Stepan and Swedish goaltending prospect Jacob Markstrom, the top-ranked European netminder. Stepan was first into the room. It was the start of a long day for the 17-year-old Minnesota native – the Blues were the first of 16 interviews he had scheduled for Wednesday. It can be an exhausting process, which the teams understand."

AS GOOD AS GOLD

Andy Baggot writes in the Wisconsin State Journal, "Jordy Murray and Derek Stepan don't know when they'll play for the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team, but just being in the neighborhood this week will give them a psychological boost. The seniors at Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.) High School will be participating in the 20th annual Gold Medal Classic tournament at Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton. The 16-team event, which starts today and runs through Sunday, features many of the elite major-midget programs from around the country."

BADGERS LAND ANOTHER RECRUIT

Todd D. Milewski writes in the Capital Times, "Derek Stepan visited the University of Wisconsin two weekends ago with Shattuck-St. Mary's linemate and Badgers recruit Brock Montpetit, not needing an extra push toward the school of his choice. 'He knew that's where I wanted to be,' Stepan said. 'I guess if I would have been iffy, he would have been like, Hey, come on to Wisconsin.' But I told him at the get-go when we first met that the Badgers is where I wanted to be.' Stepan, a 16-year-old forward from Hastings, Minn., took a step toward that goal when he gave Badgers coaches a verbal commitment late last week. He said he'd like to enter school right out of high school, in the fall of 2008, but that decision has yet to be made."
